Abstract/Artist Statement

Sometimes in academia, members of a research group may not all attend the same university. Professors often collaborate with other professors outside of their institution. Some of the information that professors may wish to share with one another can be quite large in size. Thoth aims to be the solution to this problem. Thoth is a distributed networked file system capable of allowing users to transparently view the whole system including external devices. It aims to be relatively easy to configure and to combine data from different locations to appear in one shared folder. This way a user does not have to know the specific absolute path to a file’s location on a remote filesystem. From this shared folder, users can either upload or download files. Thoth supports file permissions and user authentication in order to be selective with the data that a user wishes to share. The authentication utilizes the SHA-512 secure cryptographic hashing algorithm. Future work may include expanding upon the current implementation and adding graphical user interfaces for a better user experience.
