John Muir Esq
My dear friend,
We returned from our cottage at [Puckama?] Lake about a week ago & found your book and your kind letter of the 30th ult awaiting us both of which we were very glad to get. Our house has been since our return & is now full of company so that wife and I have not had time to more than glance over new book & as you say "it seems to read pretty well" & we both look forward with much pleasure to its perusal. Before going to the clubhouse (some six mnth ago) I had been very ill for 4 weeks & while I am now very much better, still do not feel the "best
in the world so Fay says she is going to take me to California this winter. I hope we shall be able to come out about the first of January and as Fay says I always take her to Southern California & then give her only 3 or 4 days in San Francisco so this year she is going to take me to San Francisco first and to Southern Cal after she has seen San F--.
Remember us kindly to Mrs. Muir & the children not forgetting your dear "mother-in-law" as you used to call her.
Fay & Frank both join me in thanks for your book with kindest regards.
