ARNOLD ARBORETUM,
HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Jamaica Plain, Mass., November 12,1894

My dear Muir:

Many thanks for the Walnuts which have come safely to hand aid shall be committed forthwith to mother earth. Thanks too for your consoling and hopeful remarks about The Silva. It may be a terrestrial job as you suggest but to me the Oak part of it might better be described as sub-terrestrial. They are horrid and none so bad, I believe, as those of southern California.
Yes, take your saunter through the Grand Cañon while I am finishing The Silva and then we will start for the Himalayas.

Faithfully yours,

[illegible]
