File No. 449Garrisons on Hudson, N. Y.,August 2. 1911.Houghton Mifflin Co.,Boston,Dear Sirs:In reply to your last letter of recent date, I leave for South America on the 15th of this month, and it seems unlikely that I shall be able to make satisfactory arrangement for the seria1 publication of my Boyhood and Youth at present. You stated that you could probably arrange for publication with McClure or some others. In any case I have made up my mind to delay publication until time has been given for its serial publication. I have spent about a week on it and have, I think, greatly improved it; one advantage of delay. I have been so very busy completing the Yosemite Book that the Century Company is to bring out that I have had very little time for anything else. I appreciate what you say as to the uncertainity of life, but this uncertainity unfortunately applies to publishers also and probably, all things considered it will be better to pospone the[illegible]

publication of my little Boyhood Cook until I return from my South American trip.Faithfully yours,c/o Prof. H. F. Osborn,
