J. L. PICKARD,R.F.D. 12,CUPERTINO, CAL.Aug. 14 1909John Muir S [S.?] B.Dear Dr.I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of your kind letter and the thrilling story of Sickeen. As I read it I recalled the history of the "Muir Glacier". I had just finished reading the July Number of the National Geographic Magazine, devoted largely to Alaska. I said to myself " much of the interest you given to that territory was awakened by the early exploration of its forbidding coast by my friend Muir whose scientific research in the mountains and over the ice fields of N. W. America has given him a world wide reputation".045602In his modesty he claims no great achievement, but his fame will not perish so long as mountains & ice fields endure". The nations will owe you a debt of gratitude for your interest in Conservation of her natural resources which the greed of men was fast wasting. It will give me great pleasure to meet you & renew Madison experiences in the early 60's I shall be glad also to know how "Time [swings?] her scyo[illegible] in your advancing years, whether he still marks time over his wooden face as during the days of the "Sanitary Commission".If my life is spared it is my plan during the Fall to call on you. You will be heartily welcomed here if you find it convenient to call. As our house04560
