COPY- EDITORIAL DEPARTMENTThe CENTURY MAGAZINEUnion Square, New York.Feb. 4, 1909.Dear Muir:-I have replied to this today that (as Mr. Colby tells me) both Olney and Galloway have acknowledged that other sources were available, but I think a letter from you would be well- not covering my previous ground, or doing it differently, and calling upon the East to help. Our defeat by 8 to 7 insures their defeat in the House. I can't learn what was done in the Senate Committee yesterday, but I telegraphed the Chairman, Knute Kelson, my protest and request for a hearing, and telegraphed the Appalachian Club, the Historic & Scenic, and the American Civic Assn. (MoFarland), asking them to telegraph. They have all done so. Every night I write letters to Senators and others till one o,clock. Last night I sent them' all the CENTURY editorial. I know a number of Senators and believe we can beat them in the Senate on the Joint Resolution, but of course it is up to us to get a Com. inquiry, or to revoke the grant. Your illustrated pamphlet Is fine. The OUTLOOK promised to send at once at sheer cost the500 copies to Senators and Representatives. I may be able to go before the Senate Committee if we get a hearing, as is probable. Faithfully Yours, (Signed)R.U.Johnson. Keep up the fire of local protest. Of course they are charging that we are allies of the Spring Valley. Perkins knows better. He respects you. Labor to break his opposition.
