[1][letterhead]Hyde Farm,Williamsburgh, Mass.Aug. 2. 1908.My dear Mr Muir,I have just written to the Century Co. asking permission to use your story about Stickeen in a geographical reader I am working on, and I write this letter to arouse your interest in bringing to a greater number of boys and girls this exquisite story in case you should hear from the Century Co. about it.I have read the story to my04260[2][letterhead]boys and girls each year since its publication and it is always listened to with abosorbing attention. They know a great deal about you, too, and your love for trees and mountains and glaciers. You may be interested to know that the first time I read the story, in 1897, a lady sitting in the back of the class-room, who was a chance visitor that day, told the children that she had heard the story from your lips before it was published. Although I have read it aloud more than a dozen times since then to grown-ups as well as children, I never fail to feel the same thrill of04260 [3][letterhead]excitement and appreciation as at first; its geography as well as its philosophy delight me.It will be necessary to shorten the article a little, but I hope I shall not destroy its beauty if I receive permission to use it.Very sincerely yours;(Miss) Caroline W. Hotchkins
