DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct. 16, 1902.

Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Calif.

My dear Muir:

I enclose a print of Clarence King which I think is a pretty good likeness of him in his latter years. I send it unmounted, both because it will go more safely, and also that you will be able to mount it as you please.
Of all my pictures in the Kern and King River country I find only twenty-three are good, but fortunately they are almost entirely in the Kern country, and especially around Mt. Whitney. I am having prints made including a set for you which I hope to have the pleasure of delivering to you in person. My wife and I will be in San Francisco on the 30th at the Occidental on our way to Manila, where I go to help in taking the Census. Won't you come and lunch or dine with us on that day, for I want you and Mrs. Gannett to meet, and we won't have time to visit Martinez, as the transport goes on November 1, and I shall have a good deal to do in San Francisco. Lots of love to you and yours.

Sincerely yours,

[illegible]
