President Gatch:

Allow me to introduce Mr. John Muir, a gentleman with whom you are doubtless acquainted through his excellent contributions to science, through the Overland, Harpers Magazine, and the various societies for the promotion of science. He visits Oregon in pursuit of his studies, and I am sure you will give him all possible aid. You will find Mr M. a delightful companion, & if you can prevail upon him to address your people upon glacial effects & phenomena , you will feel amply rewarded.

T[illegible] Chas. H. Allen.
