August 1, 1903.
My dear Johnson
I'm still alive after this most monstrous dose of civilization, London Paris Berlin etc etc with their miles of art galleries, museums full of old armor & [murder implements?]. - endless architecture, parks gardens [illegible].
From Paris we went to Holland- wonderful country. Visited Rotterdam, the Hague, Harlem & Amsterdam, thence to Berlin, to Petersburg to Moscow. From here
[2]
we made a hard hot 3000 mile side trip through the Crimea,- to Sebastopol, thence by carriage to Yalpa along the picturesque bluffs of the Black Sea over the Bolsklava bath grounds etc. Thence by steamer to Batoum - a fine sail along shore- thence to Borjom in the magnificent richly forested Ante Ca[illegible]casus mountains. Thence to ancient famous Tiflis - very hot very dirty & very interesting Georgian city - Thence across the Caucasus through the grand Dariel Pass past the base of Mt Kazbeck.
[3]
a noble mountain over 16000 feet high loaded with ice & snow, wreathed with clouds & the loveliest alpine flowers Had glorious side trip among its wild gardens above the lower reaches of it glaciers. Thence to Vadvoskez thence back here by another road. Three or four hours from Vladvaskez had magnificent view of Mt Elbruz, over 18000 ft high looming pure mossy white above dark forests & foothills & broad sunny grain fields. We have been here five days. This evening we start on the long R.R. trip across continent glad to think of the wilderness ahead - glad to have Holy Moscow Kremlin Fall. Give my love to your family & the Gilders. Remember me also to Mr Buell.
Ever faithfully yours
John Muir
