Martinez, July 9, 1898
My dear Johnson.
I hope to get away from here in August, go around by the great lakes spend a few days in my old haunts in the Canada woods & go south with Sargent & Canby along the Alleghenies to see the grand trees there in their autumn golden plumage, then home. This all save a day or so in New York to salute you & perhaps a day in Boston.
I'm glad the reserves are not lost. But how [comes?] it you & Pinchot have gone back on the military management when it has proved so successful, & special agents etc so complete failures?
Ever Yours,
John Muir
