John Muir Esq.
Martinez, Cal.

Dear Mr. Muir:-

I have your letter of January 14th, with the photograph enclosed, which I shall use in the article headed by your name, and I will ask the Century Company to give their consent to the use of the chapter.
Now, as to the article on Linnaeus, your letter gives exactly the impression that we would like to have in the book. We do not need a long dissertation on Linnaeus, or on science, but we would like to have just such a warm expression of admiration as you can give without books, chart or compass. Supposing it is not more than 700 or a thousand words, it will be ample to introduce such selections as we can have made here out of Linnaeus's books, by some one who reads Swedish. Mrs. Warner and I came upon the Linnaea -borealis on a trip through Northern Sweden, and were perfectly enchanted, and when we saw Linnaeus's perfectly serene and beautiful statue in Stockholm we were more enchanted still. I shall hope to get this little tribute to Linnaeus from you in the course of a few weeks. Don't say no. We will supply dates of
