My Dear General -

Mr Johnson associate Editor of the Century Magazine is in California arranging for an important series of papers for the magazine on the Pioneers of California & is very desirous to include you among the contributors. The papers are to be by representative men of reputation who participated in the events of those times & the Century wishes to reproduce the life of the old days in an authentic attractive & thourough way. your name was one of the first on Mr Johnson's list & I feel sure that you will cordially cooperate with him in this movement to glorify the pioneers. The Century has more than a million readers & this series of papers will probably revive the whole subject in a popular & interesting way, doing for early times & early timers

what its papers on the war did for war history & warriors. I took Mr. Johnston into Yosemite & the high Sierra where as you will readily believe we encountered some very fine wildness which I hope will flavor the Century for centuries to come. We have just returned from these excursions. Mr. Johnson expects to be in Chico in about a week from this date - to see you & I trust that nothing may intervene to previent your meeting. Thanks General for your prompt reply to my telegram & kind invitation. But I am far behind with my writing & fear I will not be able to accept. Ever since our last meeting at the Occidental I have been a happier man in seeing Mrs Bidwell well again & as far above the danger that threatened here health as any of us mortals ever are.

Ever Cordially your friend John Muir
