of a hawk when swooping upon its prey or leisurely descending from the sky to its nest

Wildly the white & darker clouds commingle, trees faintly outlined through their silky fringes seeming to welcome the touch of the soothing messengers of the sky on whom they depend for life giving snow & the rain.

Irised clouds are making a grand display in Little Yosemite among the ice polished domes & over the pine clad slopes

Masses of brown purple yellow & orange against which the dark spires of the forests are relieved with magical effect

To the westward there is now a grand crown of burning glowing cloud fused into one mass homogeneous darker masses right & left. Tissiack nobly wears a grand wreath about her brow, now looming to an immense height, now completely hidden making an effect indescribably sublime.

Rain at night & no sign of clearing

The firelight on yellow pine shingles of cabin roof & the quaint bedsteads make snug cozy feeling of home. Nibbling & rustle of rats & mice gave notice of companions

Little Yosemite Cascade

The cause of the widening of streams at the foot of cascades & falls especially the former, is the heaping accumulations of rocks & tree trunks accumulating in front of them during floods. The waters not being able to sweep them away after their force is diminished mostly spent on reaching the level ground

(Omit) Then of course the waters at their normal height are compelled to flow around the flood deposits usually on both sides forming small islands, on which willows & azaleas & a few pines even may be found. Such an island stands in front of this Little Yosemite Cascade.

This is the most showy of the water displays in the upper valley though to me [far] less interesting that the beautiful reaches of the river flowing between pine banks of forest trees fringed with flowers willows sedges & azalea etc the deep crystal currents slipping softly over shining sandy bottom. The cascade may be traced all the way from bottom to head without difficult walking
