North Dome, May 25, 1873. Free of snow.

The dwarf phlox is in prime full bloom also small yellow plant umbeliferae [Umbelliferae] & rare talinum or Lewisia

The view up Illilouette Canon very fine from here & complete the fall in full view, also the [the] bottom of the main valley from the Mariposa trail to South Dome.

Mt [Mount] Lyell & a few of the neighboring peaks in sight from the Coliseum peak above Lake Tenaya & Clouds Rest & Mt [Mount] Watkins. Mt [Mount] Hoffmann not in sight.

Yosemite summer is just beginning growing out of the ripe spring. Groves in the valley [intensely beautiful in] rejoicing in the beauty of this new foliage. The [spring] [purples] purple tints of the buds vanishing in warm yellow green lvs [leaves]

Slope of Indian Canon 25° [25 degrees].

The larger Sentinel Cascades occupy a recess in the wall [larger] are about 40 feet wide which is the average size for 3 or 4 months in the year, Strikes a beveled lace-making slope at bottom making beautiful tissue like that of the Illilouette in autumn

Views from the talus at foot of cascades very fine especially of Sentinel, El Capitan, & Cathedral rocks

But the view still finer from the smaller cascade

which is easily reached, the way being smooth & brushless up a slope planted with Spraguea & penstemon lutea [laetus] & menzesii [menziesii]

All the Rubus & maples are found at the head of the other slope.

The gully washed by the larger cascade is about 30 feet deep on the average. & has vertical walls. some parts & very rough with projecting boulders

Alt [altitude] of slope about 1300 feet. Formed of detritus of snow & earthquake avalanches & downwashing of floods etc.

Nevada Fall.

Large pothole on the right side near the brink 17 ft [feet] 3 in [inches] deep. Azalea tamarac [tamarack] pine, Yellow pine cedar & douglas spruce growing on the island formed by the division of the stream a little way back from the head of the fall.

This arrangement of dividing the waters seems to have been made from the beginning judging from the appearance of the channels

The view [from] of the head of [the] Nevada fall 15 or 20 yards back from the verge is one of the most exciting I have yet seen. The channel is [roughened] very rough both on the bottom & sides with [projecting rock] ribs & [elbow] angles
