high wild mountains & several baby deer. I try to [had hard work] teach[ing] him [Carlo] that he must not touch wingless ducks or baby deer. Deer very abundant hereabouts & higher.

Sep [September] 4th) [No clouds at all] All the vast dome of sky is clear filled only with light [sunbeams] Mild tranquil faithful. More & more as the time of departure approaches I feel anxious to stay in this good high heaven [celestial wilderness forever].

5th) No clouds at all visible. The weather is cool calm bright as if no great thing was ready be done. I have been sketching the [grand] N Tuolumne Church. The sunset was gloriously bright & [cheeringly telling. So confidingly charming] I felt willing to obey the faintest hearable behest of the mountains [commands of the high free sky].

6th) Still another perfectly cloudless day. [A day of solid sunshine] purple evening & morning. All the middle hours one mass of pure still calm serene sunshine. Soon after sunrise the air grew warm & there was no wind. One naturally halted to see what Nature intended to do. There is a suggestion of [eastern/seastorm] [The weather was delightful hushed cool calm like New England] Indian summer in the warm hushed brooding weather. [But the rich thick mellow gold is awaiting.] The fine yellow atmosphere though thin[ner than New England]

[& Mississippi autumn air] is still plainly of the same general character as that of Wisconsin Indian Summer. The peculiar mellowness is perhaps in part caused by myriads of ripe spores adrift in the sky.

Mr. Delaney now keeps up a solemn talk about the need of getting away from these high mountains telling sad stories of flocks that perished in the storms that broke suddenly through the midst of fine innocent [calm bland] weather like this [that] we are now enjoying [& which seemed to promise to last forever]. “In no case” said
