…our eyes are turned. Now comes sundown; the west is all a glory of color transfiguring everything. Far up the [long braided slokes of the] Pilot Peak ridge [I see] the radiant [forests] hushed and thoughtful [ever conceived.]

[The glorious hosts of the forest] receiving the sun's goodnight [last blessings, his mellow level flushing beams at setting,] as solemn & impressive a leave taking as if sun and tree were to meet again no more. [Now] The daylight fades. The color spell is broken and the forest breathes free [again and the happy leaves are quivering] in the night breeze [at rest] beneath the stars.

[never to rise again. From my feet far upward & upward [to] over all these swelling slopes to the summit of the Merced Ridge every tree of all the mighty host seems to stand in hushed expectant awe baptized in the purple flood, then farewell & the daylight fades & the spell is broken & every tree [the forest] breathes […ol happy leaves every needle are quivering] Free again & its needles shake & sparkle in the wind [night breeze] beneath the [white steady] stars.]

The light is peculiarly white & then [etherial [ethereal] thick balminess about [in] it], yet [the weather is pleasantly warm calm, the winds are hardly perceptible. X The calmness the weather on the mountains here is one of its most striking characteristics. There is [O]only a moderate breeze from the summits [down the mountains] at night, a slight breathing [in] the opposite direction during the day, or stillness [is] complete that no leaf stirs [wind is strong enough to be] [fe]lt. None of the trees hereabouts have but little much to [and] history pressed upon them say about winds, they stand [so] erect in such
