98 The color of inside of lvs [leaves] [polu] this out, pale streaks run between furrows wh [which] are [par] & cross ridged this is really the bark of a branchlet there is true wood inside of each needle The last yr of [tan] ascending the [other] horizontal or descending making beaut variation. The same more or less true of all vigorous branches near top. Less marked in young trees than in old & mid aged
