Will [Willow] spruce purplish bark dark foliage pale on young tips Spreading at bottom as [loving] the ground Troops of branches as groping for light & for love of the air streams in wh [which] they grow Ascending also as knowing [conscripts] of heaven So unaspiring yet so conscious of heaven & so [receptive] of its blessings [sketch] Curved branches on ground Tree is a word of love [on] understood Spoken in simple human language amid that kind of beauty & love called savageness coldness barrenness etc

110 Landscapes form & fade in the eye of an artist as he rides Crystal Valley once finely laked & iced Ice from NE [northeast] over crest [sketch: big lake opp [opposite] main trib [tributary]] There is [two] [principal] bends in great [Tuol] [Tuolumne] Valley 1st made by [big] fountain tribs [tributaries] 2nd by main trib [tributary] ice Clds [Clouds] hover over like spirits of departed gls [glaciers]
