17 Pass near Mt [Mount] Silliman Dogwood on [strms] [streams] [Sarcodia] at Horse Corrall, July 25. Also Geum 5 6750 Giant Forest Tho [though] many pines & silver Firs among the Seqs [Sequoias] outnumbering the latter 10 or a 100 to one they do not kill the young Sequs [Sequoias] tho [though] overtopping them, & while the seqs [sequoias] are mere Youths

18 the competing trees die and give the ground to the Seqs [Sequoias] In Kaweah Seq [Sequoia] wood the ground is carpeted with lupine, horizontal [wheel] lvs [leaves]! Symporicarpus [Symphoricarpos] common here. Lowly Rosa not v. [very] ab [abundant] small gilia v [very] ab [abundant] Dogwood & hazel common.
