Foggy Cape. 185 [miles] from Kodiack. Little land seen. Wake with headache from extreme heat of room. The game scout reported a few bear and reindeer tracks, but saw none of the animals. He was left to look out for game but to shoot none, only to be ready to point it out to the game fellows that they might have the pleasure of making the hole in the animals, shedding the blood, satisfying the savage instincts that should be kept down rather after civilization has gone far enough for trousers and prayers. In Chaskalov’s lecture the evening before last he said heredity is conservative, and likened it to a pyramid standing on good firm base. Variation to one on its point, most of changes along lines of variation perish, only few that chance to fit best the environment survive. Had long talk on bookmaking. Much twaddle about grand scientific monument, etc. [John] [Burroughs] will probably write the narrative. Much ado about little. Game hunting, mostly wondrous unsuccessful, the chief aim the rest, mere reconnaissance. As we could not reach Kodiack before 12 midnight we stopped 4 or 5 [hours] at Sturgeon Bay so as to pass thro’ Shelikoff Strait, narrow and full of rocks in daylight, reaching Kodiack at 7 A.M. [July] 20th. It was rainy at Sturgeon [Bay], but 2 boatloads went ashore and built big
