Grand moraines all the way and far out in valley toward Sweetwater Mtns. Resisting granitic and slate masses rising hundreds of feet above level of the general valley greatly roughening it. Tower peak makes fine show form road -a balanced, handsomely sculptured mass with snow womb and probably small gl in the highest recess. The only mountain snowy and icey seen on the trip - only small remnants to the north. Fine proof here of glaciations on sage brush region east of range. Most lava soon crumbling and hides greater part of com. Traces of ice action. Aug 30. Camped in willows at Junction last evening. Thence to Bridgeport 17ms. Small place Court house, judge Goodall, knew me from writings. Knew John Swett and Judge Brown. Bridgeport meadows 8 X 4 ms. Long and wide. 4 or 5000 head of cattle, mostly driven to lower valleys in winter. Aug. 31. Put up at D. M. Walters last evening. Fine bread, biscuit, chicken, cream, milk etc. Hay vegetables etc garden. Rosemary stock Hot - house in bluff with a palm, tall tomatoes pelusinas dwarf fig with little fruits on it grand potatoes - everything homely fresh and benevolent from the fiery volcanic soil in gulch between two rough ridges, covered with nutpine, silvery willow, wildrose, Bigloria, purple aster. Mr Walters has small library miscellaneous books: Origin of God, 400 years of free thought, Huxley Darwin Spencer a vol or two of each giving evidence of speculative mind, spiritualism etc. His life pathetic and tragic. Rough road to Mono Lake Sage brush no nut pines except on rocks safe from fire. Mill near old Mono digging and P.O. another P.O half mile along west shore of lake, many ranches Hay timothy and alfalfa. Found road to the lake very rough, paved through gorge red granite. Swallows nest on cliffs admirably safe. Doves Meadow lark Ocespetics Mtn mocking bird ab in sage - never in mtns finches
