10 July 14 4th day. Rose at 4 o clock cldy [cloudy] & dismal. Looked for my goats. Saw only one. Thought wolves might be where goats were & in a few minutes heard them [ ] horrid howling low lone drawn out Seemed near but [I could not see them] was unable to catch sight of them In ½ an hour began again nearer & I thought of my
Alpenstock. My only weapon moved to a big square boulder Today reached Bald Mtn [mountain] nearly opp [opposite] White gl [glacier] Glorious [views] lovely bright clear day There are six tribs [tributaries] on N W side [ ] arm Country to the gray gl [glacier] next after Granite gl [glacier] going NW. Next is dirt gl [glacier] near the mouth of wh [which] I am camped.
