58 How rich & green & fruitful the coast fields appear to [view] fresh from the arid sage wastes of Nevada How perfectly glows the Sierra forests as day dawned upon them after months on the Truckee wastes of the E deserts The mtn sands of Nevada & plains seem like geological [specimens] arranged in a sort of natural [ ]. [sketch] [Sunset] on San Francisco bay a long broad bar of [bossy] gold on the water laid on like a [tapering] [rod] of glowing molten iron all softened on the edges with short [motionless] flames 59
