Water adobe flats [ ] & shade mtns [mountains] coming forward on the ample [ ] marvelously colored [ ] in massive promontories of [ ] [here] View of the Sink from the same point evening the water shown in a thousand [sep] mirrors large shallow lake towards the NW. [northwest] fed by Old River—large vanishing fragmentary [sheet] on the E [east] fed by the slough. The Carson Lake or Upper Sink a fine sheet with fish [“Chubs”]. Marvellous beauty of the sink at sunrise gray-purple yet [waveless] sea. Mtn [mountain] shadow purple mists illumined

39 7 species of butterflies on [nearest] Bees hum Many jolly grasshoppers blue winged—rattle with sharp click seem to effect all this noise by means of wings & [wingsness] Delightful to find so much [ ] defiant life in so hopeless a wild the plains look like sunbaked ash heaps, the mtns [mountains] the same piled with steep slopes. Yet both are full of life. Camp in [Johns] Canon a garden of [brier] roses & [oenothera] Thousands of Yel [Yellow] blossoms open every night in each flower requires about 15 seconds to open. Then they are instantly visited by Hummingbird moths [ ] wh [which] push their blunt hairy muzzles into them & come out laden with cobwebby pollen to spread upon the branching pistils of the next flr [flower] visited It is curious to observe how eagerly they
