The base scales curving up regularly around them like a calyx [sketch: young cones] A portion of young shoot always leafless more or less according to length of whole shoot. [sketch] Bud scales handsomely relfexed.

The denuded mtns [mountains] about the lake region & foothills in general are being covered with a second growth. What will probably be their fate? Apt to be too dense. Danger from fire. The sterile cones of Jeff P. [Jeffrey Pine] much shorter & paler colored than those of Yo P [Yosemite Park] 20 to 30 in cluster-- the larger the cluster the fewer the needles in tassel [ ] it [sketch]
