Original in possession of Mr. H. G. Bryant. Martinez, Cal. Dec. 22, 1908Dear Mr. Bryant: I am very sorry to say that I'll not be able to be with you at the meeting of the American Alpine Club this year. Several months ago I took a severe bronchial cold or the grippe that keeps me a prisoner here. In all my mountaineering I never took a single cold of any sort. In the lowlands I seldom get through a single winter unscathed. But for a' that & a' that I hope to see you all ere long & make the acquaintanceof every climber of the club. As to the cost of crossing the continent, it is not in the way at all. I would gladly go farther to see a new tree, much more to meet the able mountaineers of the American Alpine Club. Please assure our board of directors that I sincerily appreciate the kindness confidence & honor so generously bestowed upon me. Faithfully YoursJohn Muir0
