strictly private & confidentialMay 23, 1908Dear Mr ColbyI had a letter from the President last evening from which I quote "I am trying to see if we can not leave the things on the line that you indicate - that is, damming Lake Eleanor & letting San Frnacisco depend for a generation or so upon that & the Tuolumne tributaries. But of course I must see that S. F. has an adequate water supply."So you see things are not so bad as they look in the Coll.Ever yrs John Muir(Dont mention this letter to anyone.)
