Funston Camp July 18/08Darling Helen :About 100 of the Whitney party got back to this main camp yesterday & today, all except 2 having got. to the top & of course are happy & exhilarated. Almost everyone in the outing is a good tough walker & climber but none could outwalk or outclimb you when you were at your best in the ante-grip & pneumonia days, & doubtless at the speed toward complete recovery you are now making you will soon be as tough & sound as ever, & even stronger & better in every way.I got your 1st letter on the 17th & was very glad after so long a silence wh seemed longer on account of the many new sights & sounds of the people & mountains. It seems wonderful that so torrid a temp -as 115 should be even barely tolerable to you not to any pleasant & according to your own heart It is like being tried in a fiery furnace which must surely roast out all the base disease ore & leave only the pure health gold. How does old [illegible?] take such temperature. 1 suppose we will start home the day after tomorrow & you therefore should send all letters to Martinez hereafter, tho any ranching Mineral king after we pass it will be forwarded I had a fine trip all alone as of yoro up one the tributary streams reaching far up in the kaweah Mountains. Saw a waterousel feeding its young etc. etc. wh I'll tell you about soon.I' m feeling better every day, & lose & less regret loss of time on this fine piney mountain outing. My kindest regards to all the good Daggett folk who have been & are so kind to us these late eventful & trying times.Much love to you Darling, from your ownJohn Muir
