Westfield, Dunbar [Scotland] June 18th, 1907.My dear Cousin John Muir,We were highly delighted on Sunday evening when a lady was announced from California, a Miss Hofman. When she said she promised to you to come and see us we kept her all night, to hear all about you and Helen and Wanda. We were sorry she could not remain longer than one night with us. She seemed such a kindly, happy, cheerful lady. She will give you all particulars of her visit to Dunbar when she gets to Martinez again. She must be a capable traveller for going about the world.I think I told you we were not letting our house this summer. We are both very well. Maggie has no asthma this summer, so we are sitting quietly at Dunbar. James Hay is not letting his house in Cheshire this year. Mrs. Hay has been very ill with rheumatic pains for nearly two months and has to be lifted about.I do hope your dear Helen is much stronger. I think you should bring her to Scotland this season and see all your old friends. I am drawing to my later end -- 84 if spared till October; but I am surrounded with many comforts, so I try to be happy and content.
