May 3rd, 1897R. W. GILDER, EDITOR.R. U. JOHNSON,ASSOCIATE EDITOR.C.C. BUEL,ASSISTANT EDITOR.Dear Muir:-I thank you very much for what you have done in thematter of Peter French. I have a note from Mr. Young speaking highly of him, which will be of use to his sister in her effort to get him appointed Collector of Sitka. He has a fine war record. It seems to me that the forest reservation matter is in good shape now.Pinchot thinks so, and things are moving. Already the Senate is investigating the effect of forest devastation at the head-waters of the Mississippi upon the recent floods.I am glad to hear of your activity in the preparation of articles on the general subject. As soon as I can get a breathing time I will try to write you a letter.[illegible]Mr. John Muir,Martinez, Cal.02281
