Jamaica Plain, Mass., September 13, 1899. My dear Muir: Why is it that [guitters] are always obstinate? If you deny this proposition, prove it by making your appearance in St. Louis at the end of next week. I expect now to leave here on the 19th and go by Chicago and Peoria, Illinois, to St. Louis, arriving there Thursday or Friday, the 21st or 22nd. Canby will go directly to St. Louis from Wilmington, meeting me there. We shall probably stay in the neighborhood of St, Louis for at least three days before starting southward, so you will have abundant time after you get this letter to write a few articles, pack your gripsack, investigate the Juniper in eastern Oregon and meet us In St. Louis. Yes, this may be our last trip for I am getting old and rheumaticky and Crataegus will finish me, I fancy, before I get done with it: if there is anything left, we have India and China to fall back upon. I had a couple of days with Canby in Wilmington and Pennsylvania hunting Crataeguses and found the weather abominably hot. In haste, Faithfully yours, C. S. [illegible] John Muir, Esq.Martinez, Cal.
