ARNOLD ARBORETUM,HARVARD UNIVERSITY.Jamaica Plain, Mass.........April 21,................1899.My dear Muir:You know more about the matter discussed in this dispatch to the new York Tribune. I have contempt for Mr. Binger Hermann and I have no doubt he will do harm to the reservations if he can. This matter ought to be headed off if there is any way in finding out what is going on.I suppose the Reservation which I see the President has made is the same old racket which we encountered. I have no reason to believe that a reservation there is any more advantageous to the whole country now than it was two years ago when we investigated the matter, but somebody I suppose had a pull with the administration. I see also in the newspapers that there is talk of carrying out our recommendations and making a national park out of Mt, Ranier. Do you know anything about this? It is certainly a desirable thing to do.I have a very fine new Gleditschia tree from Texas and this morning I hear of what may be a new Hickory in the same region, and so it goes,I hope to get off with Canby in about a week from today for Rome, Chattanooga, Biltmore, etc. We shall miss you terribly.I am still unable to get any satisfaction about my oregon juniper and Mendocino cypress, so you may see me on your side of the02567
