[Original letter returned to Miss M. Merrill] Dec. 1st., [1868]Dear Merrill friends: Good evening. I am sitting upon a California door-step. I came out to look at the night and happened to think of you. I think of you often, but seldom so vividly as now. I often wonder why I cannot hear from you. The full moon is a few degrees above the grand Sierra Nevadas and only one small cloud flake is in all the sky. Beautiful night, and something has spoken of Indiana. A little way out on the plains between the Stanislaus and Tuolumne rivers, Dec. 1st. J.M.[Envelope addressed Miss Catherine Merrill, Care Merrill & Co., Indianapolis, Ind.]
