The weather was about 1/2 [bought?] & we glided along the green & yellow shore in comfort. The [lovely?] islands passing in harmonious succession like ideas an a line poem. rain did not hinder us but when the wind was too wild we stayed in camp. The Inds usually improving such storms in deer hunting while I examined the rockes & woods. Most of our camps were made in nooks that were charmingly embowered and fringed with fern & bushes & after supper we sat long by the fire listening to the stories of the Inds about the wild animals, their hunting adventures, wars traditions religious customs. etc. While every Ind party we met we interviewed & noted every village we came to. Thus passed our days & nights until we reached the W coast of Admiralty Island. intending to make a strait course thence up Lynn Canal When we learned from a party of Inds that the [Chilcots?] had been drinking [illegible] & fighting. [illegible] [father?] had been shot & that we could not go safely into their country until their quarrels were settled.
