1267 Webster St., Oakland,Nov. 19/94.Dear John Muir,For the fruit of your land and the fruit of your brain, I thank you. For this last, I cannot say how much I thank you, nor how glad I am to see you in covers. I began to think I should never behold that Book with the eyes of the flesh, and was wondering if I should have to wait for your prose-poem on the "Mountains of God." As if all were not the018772Mountains of God!I supposed your pubs. send you the press notices, but I enclose one chanced upon in a paper sent me by my friend Miss Carpentier. If you already have it send this back. It is hardly the kind of "criticism" I would like to see, for while the reviewer tells what the book is about! and gives you credit for understanding your subject, he says not a word about the consummate beauty of your work. I don't believe the man could tell018773a bird-carol from a steam-whistle, or note the difference between one of the poor abortive little hills of the East, and the infinite heights of which you sing, for your book is a song, a grand song!Love to all your family and yourself.Your old-time friend,Ina [Coolfrith?]P. S. No, I cannot have Mr. Cheney's place x. I am "disqualified by sex."x Librarian of S F Free Library01877
