[3]EDITORIAL OFFICE OFThe Atlantic Monthly,BOSTON.to fulfil that wish. It would not be impossible, so far as the matter of bulk is concerned to make a book of the articles we have published in the Atlantic alone, but it would be preferable, we think, to add other papers to them so as to make the book about one fourth larger in bulk, and it has also seemed to us that it would add variety to it if papers on the other parks might be added. This brings to mind the other project of which you wrote us in '97--of a book. on Alaska. We do not know what progress you may have made upon this, or whether you have made any. You wrote only in your letter "I think you can count on the Alaska book, but when the manuscript will be ready I do not know." In the same letter "The fientury has already published three or four articles of mine on Alaska. Whether or not they will allow me to use them in the book I do not know.[4]If not, I suppose I will have to write them over again, making them better if I can."We are of course not in the least disposed to hurry you in these two undertakings, but we are, as you know, very much interested in them, and are hopeful of bringing them to a successful completion. It would be a real gratification to us if we could bring out the book on the Parks Yosemite Valleys, as in one place. you have named it, this fall, and we should be very much obliged if you will write us what the prospects for doing this are.Yours very truly,[illegible]Mr. John Muir. 02716
