[First draft of letter, in note-book #59] (65)

Martinez, Oct. 21, 1900.

My dear Cousin [Mrs. Lunam:]

When your summer letter came here I was away in the mountains for inspiration and rest after a long siege of pen work. I am always glad to hear how you and Maggie and all the friends are getting on in the old Dunbar home, and to hear about the Hays also. I shall always remember as a great pleasure the Dunbar and the Liverpool visits. I was fortunate enough to be able to make, while I oftentimes think how fine it would be were we only near enough for at least yearly meetings.
I'm glad you have been so well through the summer, and hope you will escape the miserable influenza, etc. so common nowadays all over the world in winter, we dread it even in Golden California. We are all about as usual except Maggie, who has not been so well for a month or two but is slowly recovering again. Sarah was greatly pleased to get your letter, and is much interested in the family history. Wanda comes home every Saturday morning and goes back to school Monday. "Muir Station" is at the side of one of our vineyards only a short walk from the house. Helen seems in no hurry to go away to school, but she is developing finely, and will learn fast enough by and by. I'll send their pictures as soon as they get them, which I hope will be soon.
Remember me to Maggie and Susan Gilroy, Jane Mather and the Hays. I'm sending you a magazine. Heaven bless you all.

Your cousin,

J. M.
