CHICAGOSep't 9th 1901.Martinez, Cal.My Dear Friend:-We received yours of the 24th ult with newspaper clipping, which I enclose herewith.Tomorrow my old company is to be merged in the big consolidation, and further proceedings will interest me but little. So the next day wife and I will leave for our cottage in "Wisconsin, where we expect to remain till the last of October. Now about the typewriter; we have about 30 machines in use in our office, seven dlffrent makes.I talked, today with one of cur best and oldest writers, and she tells me that the"Remington" is by long odds the best. She says there are some things about the later machines that are nice tho' not necessary, but, as she expressed it,"they ere half the time in the hospital", she means for repairs.I am sure you will find the machine a great aid in your work, and that Helen will really enjoy worKing on it, will learn to use it and with rapidity, especialy if she car at the start take a few lessons [illegible]n fingering. The Remington people will eive the necessary lessons without chairge. Now if you would have her take lessons in short hand, and when she has learned so as tc take your talk as fast as you speak, which is not fast, then you sit down and tell Wanda orany person what you wish ic say, Helen can take it in short hand, cory it out on the machine, and yQU will find it better than you can write it.with kind regards to you all I remainYour sincere friend[02889]
