I am of course interested in the movement to preserve the Santa Cruz Redwoods but do you consider that a reservation at that point, useful and desirable as it might be, would reserve a good typical block of the Redwood forest? My idea is that we ought to go somewhere north of Russian River, probably in the neighborhood of Humboldt Bay. I had supposed that the Redwoods south of San Francisco were now very few and scattered, although of course there are a number of large individuals. What we want really is a big block of the virgin forest. How do you suppose Mrs, Hearst would feel about such an enterprise, or is she putting all her spare cash into the buildings of the University of California? If It comes in your way why don't you sound her on the subject? I understand from one of your clippings that the movement to secure the Calaveras Grove has fallen through for the present—too bad.I am busy all the time with misorablqiputtering things and really accomplish nothing.
