William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

December 1871 brought "clusters of ripe golden days and silvery nights." However, on the afternoon of December 16th, there was an unusual cloud with rain during the night, which continued through the 18th. With this came 56 new falls in the upper end of the valley. Where heretofore Muir had been critical of a Thomas Hill painting for including too many falls, now such a painting would not be unbelievable with fifty.
