In their introduction the editors discuss the need for the microform project, their search procedures for gathering Muir papers from over 40 repositories and individuals, the organization of the papers and filming procedures, their editorial controls, and bio-bibliographic references. After a list of credits and the legal restrictions relating to the use of the John Muir Papers, there is a brief biographical sketch of John Muir followed by the lengthiest and most detailed chronology of his life that has been published, pages 20-31. The contents of each microfilm reel and each microfiche are listed on pages 33-79. The voluminous index of near 19,000 entries comprise over half the volume. Prefacing it are helpful suggestions for using the index. Of interest to readers of this Bibliography is the fact that ""control cards for all manuscripts identified as published or precursor works refer to a numbered entry"" in this Bibliography. A microform package is available from the publisher containing 51 reels of microfilm, 53 microfiche, plus The Guide and Index . . . for $3,250.
