William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

Muir accompanies a hunting party for a few days, at which time he observes: ""The woods and waters of Shasta contain more wild life in the form which hunters call game than those of any other Alpine region I have ever entered."" He concludes: ""Leading the mean lives we do, we little know how much wildness there is in us.""
