[8] & saw the Captain and Chief who seemed glad to see me. Gave them outline of my trip. The Captain brought lumber for the cabin. Found or was found by Mr. Dubois who knew my friends in Portage, went to school with my brother Dan at Portage. Heard of my early days. Spoke of the wooden clock etc. Had pleasant talk told of Prof. Butler’s family. He introduced me to Mr. [Lee, Fee] passenger agent of Northern Pacific. Who admired my writings he said, and got me to promise to write an article on [Thoughts] of Alaska. Mostly thru Muir for pamphlet. For wh he is to send 250 dollar check. Also he wants me to visit Yellowstone & promises transportation etc. Was introduced to many ladies & gentlemen & drawn into a sort
