20 There is a very remarkable accumulation of slaty sharp angled masses of granite on the divide lol Yo Sem & cascade glaciers, where the East most tributary of cascade originate. [sketch: [Debris]; Section of basin] It does not [occur] in one smooth mass but is conspicuously ridged the ridges conforming to the brow of the hill & concentrically to each other. They (the slates) seem to have been [jointed] together the [flakes] overlying & lapping like cakes of drift ice on a shore. The mass is much disintegrated. The oldest pines are rooted in it & it evidently is contemporaneous with the glaciers being just on divide perhaps the ice could not carry it away. 21 [sketch]
