To cross from Bald Mtn [mountain] hold on a course S 30 W or to 1st large trib [tributary] above large island Address John Muir Martinez California Outlet of Middle Island Lake July 12 1890 8:45 P.M.

1 July 13 3d day climbed to El [elevation] of 2500 wh [which] is about 1500 ab [above] the level of ice. Fine [shag] of bryanthus [ ] Saw 3 ptarmigan [ ] white wings Sod is [sloughing] off Trees storm [burst] from S.E. [Veratria] at 2500. Trees still higher 3000 July 12 2d day Loomis assisted in hauling sled to Spruce Mtn [mountain] Interested going only a little way & returning to camp. I gave him my [bur] sack & he slept warm [going]
