island scenery above with cascades [thru] to lake tranquil lovely unlike any mtn [mountain] river at 7000 ft [ever] [saw]. No sign of turmoil fire or [ ]. All deep roaring

The Mtns [mountains] mostly low 10000 or less from 2 to 3 above basin. Forested to top nearly some [showing] shadow [glaciation] & table tops. Few snowy to great or marked extent. Beautiful in gen [general] grouping not awe inspiring

The Lakes, Yel [Yellowstone] v [very] picturesque clear with forested islands. Dense dark woods all about it. v [very] varied & beautiful shore lines full of trout. Lakes of woods seem darkly shadowed.

[Beam] lake in [wild] basin grassy & with pond lilies.

Many small pools.

The Geysers. Out of the tranquil cool damp woods one sees hundreds of columns & wind blown masses of white vapor like rugged masses of storm clds [clouds] among the trees rising far up the mtn [mountain] sides & filling the valleys of Fire hole. Nothing to prepare the mind for strange [laboratory] cookhouse. Geological kitchen of nature. As we enter val [valley] ground seems white [caves] with successive terraces about them widening & fading irregularly into white [place/plan] few scattered groves on filled up bottom grassy sedges asters [spruce] [mimulus] marvelous [fountains] some

playing [ ] All smoking growling gasping boiling simmering.

[Water] pure Craters exceedingly beautiful like delicate coral morning glory pool nearly [calm]
