May 8, 1912.Dear Mr. Muir,Please forgive our delay in writing you concerning the final details of the publication of your book, "The Story of My Boyhood and Youth". After your very pleasant and satisfactory call the other day, we took up the matter afresh with the editors of the Atlantic Monthly, and the Youth's Companion. The former magazine is ready now to use four installments for $500.00, and make something of a feature of them in the prospectus of the coming fall, provided that we and you, are willing to defer publication of the book until after the first of the year. It has not been practicable to make any arrangement with the Youth's Companion. We believe that this prior appearance of the material in the Atlantic Monthly, quite apart from any question of the returns, to be distinctly serviceable as advance publicity in promoting the sale of the book. We are disposed therefore, at your agreement, to make this arrangement. The member of our firm who makes a specialty of executing contracts has been absent from the office with illness for some time past, but on his return we shall draw up a new contract in accordance with our new understanding, i.e., that it is not to embody the definite refusal of the next book in this series, and send it to you for your signature. We hope however, and we are pretty confident that the results of publication of this first volume will be such that you will decide to put Part 2 when it comes along, into our hands. If we may have it early enough, we can, we be-05192
