Portage Jany 5th 1883Dear John & LouieOn New Years – morning we were surprised to see David come in with two boxes from Cal. so he unpacked our one – spreading the contents all over the table and reading the labels – We were much pleased to see so many specimens of plants , trees, and flowers, so many kinds that we had not seen before – We shared with David - and Katie is quite pleased with them – and will try to coax some of them to grow – it was quite an undertaking – to prepare and pack up, such numbers – for us – “Many thanks” -
