William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

This letter (September, 1874) is preceded by a lengthy biographical sketch of Muir and followed with a story of Muir's rescue of S. Hall Young in Alaska, entitled, ""An Act of Heroism""; both were written by George Wharton James. His authorship is not acknowledged in this publication, but is indicated in his correspondence with Muir in the controversy which evolved concerning James' possession and intention of publishing the letters Muir had written to Mrs. Jeanne [Ezra S.J Carr (see no. 331). This is the first time that this letter appeared in print; see no. 373 for annotation.
